Dear Tulane Community,
We have much better news as we continue to closely monitor the saltwater intrusion situation in the Mississippi River.
Yesterday, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) released a new timeline indicating that the saltwater intrusion is not predicted to reach New Orleans' main drinking water intake until the end of November and may not reach it at all. Earlier predictions had it arriving in late October.
As of right now, the USACE forecast does not anticipate New Orleans will see levels of saltwater that would affect plumbing and drinking water. However, we will continue preparing should anything change.
All university activities and operations continue under normal conditions. The university does not plan to move to remote working or learning. Tap water in New Orleans remains safe to drink and use for all purposes.
Given this new timeline, we will only email on this topic once a week on Fridays unless otherwise needed. Previous emails to the Tulane community on this issue can be found here.
As a reminder, the official source of Tulane-related emergency information is tulane.edu/emergency.
Respectfully,
The Office of Emergency Preparedness & Response
