Paddy Chayefsky’s most celebrated original screenplay is a sardonic account of an aging TV news anchor (Peter Finch) whose on-air mental breakdown and subsequent rants are exploited by network executives to boost ratings. Nominated for nine Oscars including Best Picture and Director, NETWORK took home four: Actor (Finch), Actress (Faye Dunaway), Supporting Actress (Beatrice Straight), and Original Screenplay. William Holden, Robert Duvall, and Ned Beatty co-star. 122 min.

A poker-faced, apocalyptic masterpiece that was one of the most original films of the 1990s, THE HOLE returns to arthouse theaters across the US, on the first new 35mm prints struck in over two decades. In an unnamed city emptied out by an epidemic and assailed by endless rain, a lonely young man living in a crumbling apartment building begins a tentative, initially adversarial relationship with the solitary woman residing below him through a hole in his floor/her ceiling. Subtitles. 95 min.

Bahram Beyzai's (Downpour, Stranger and the Fog) BASHU, THE LITTLE STRANGER was voted "Best Iranian Film of all time" in November 1999 by the Persian movie magazine Picture World poll of 150 Iranian critics and professionals. During the Iran-Iraq War. Bashu, a young boy loses his house and all his family. Scared, he sneaks into a truck that is leaving the area. He gets off the truck in the Northern part of the country, where everything from landscape to language is different. He meets Naii, who is trying to raise her two young children on a farm, and quickly forms a bond with her. Subtitles. 120 min.

MAN OF IRON, Wajda's remarkable sequel to Man of Marble, welds newsreel footage of the Solidarity strike to fiction in a strong investigative drama. A radio producer is given the mission to discredit the man who started the Gdansk shipyard strike, Maciej Tomczyk, the son of Mateusz Birkut, who had died in 1970 in the first shipyard strikes. Subtitles. 147 min.
