APR 2025

Drawing of three plans hanging from a line and in script it says You don't have to bloom every season. Some seasons are for planting.

And just like that, we are wrapping up the Spring 2025 semester.

We have been so busy in the DS office and our registered student list has grown by 5% (60+ more students than last year)! We have successfully added Peer Coaches to the team, had amazing conversations within the Disability Advisory Committee, and had a wonderful Disability Awareness Week - with one amazing event to be rescheduled for the fall!

We are sending well-wishes to our graduates and a good summer for all.

SPOTLIGHT: Autism Acceptance!

April is World Autism Acceptance Month

At UML we believe that autistic people are amazing! Our students, faculty and staff are living full lives, personally and professionally, and have very bright futures.

Here are just a few ways we can show up for our autistic community members: educate ourselves, include autistic people in the conversation and at the decision-making table, be kind, be curious and ask questions!

If you would like to learn more about how to be an ally, a great starting point is the Autistic Self Advocacy Network which is run by and is for autistic people by embracing a motto of “Nothing About Us Without Us.”

Below are some really cool things happening recently in the autism community

Survivor 48 star Eva Erickson shares about that emotional moment, which involved her being overstimulated and having what she called an "autism episode" during an immunity challenge, followed by castaway Joe Hunter helping her “get grounded.”

Bella Ramsey revealed they are autistic and called the diagnosis "freeing."

The 21-year-old breakout star of The Last of Us, who is non-binary and goes by they/them pronouns, said they were diagnosed while filming the debut season of the hit HBO apocalyptic drama, after a crew member with an autistic daughter had assumed that Ramsey was autistic, too. It set off a journey that ended with a formal psychiatric assessment and a diagnosis.

Autism in the Media

A threefold increase in the number of children being diagnosed with autism is a “good thing”

On Lunchtime Live, Eleanor McSherry, formerly Head of Autism Studies at UCC, said the rising number of diagnoses “makes sense."

Whether it’s broad-spectrum autism or Down Syndrome, the staff at  Cafe Joyeux are trained and expected to perform like any other employee, something which Rachael Barcelona told CBS News “changed her life.”
