Class of 2023

  • Don't forget to fill out the FAFSA asap! Click here to learn about what a FAFSA is, who needs to apply (spoiler: everyone!). 

  • Scholarship Season is in FULL SWING for seniors! My motto is that you won't receive scholarship money if you don't apply!  Several upcoming scholarships are currently located on our website.  Make sure to check back often. So many scholarships have been added recently!

  • Scholarship Search Engines: Remember, you should never have to pay for a scholarship search! A few good searches include Big FutureFastwebScholarships.com, and Going Merry 

Class of 2024

  • The Hamilton Award: This award recognizes young people for their academic, personal, service and entrepreneurial accomplishments; forty students across the nation are selected annually as winners of the Hamilton Award and subsequently enrolled in AHS’ five-year Empowerment Program. Winners  receive two $500 cash awards to pay for college expenses at their entrance and exit from the Empowerment Program. Furthermore, prior to beginning university, Scholars receive a laptop to assist in their college studies. All applicants should be college-bound high school juniors who are committed to participating in this rigorous five-year curriculum.   • Coolidge Scholarship Program: The Coolidge Scholarship is an annually awarded, full-ride, presidential scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study. Students apply for the Coolidge Scholarship during their junior year of high school. For more information, visit the Coolidge Scholars website. Deadline for application is February 23, 2023.

  • Make a College LIst: Want to know what you should be doing now to prepare for college after high school? Your junior year is the PERFECT time to be making a list of colleges you are interested in.  Then start making plans to visit them this next spring and summer.  You won't regret the pre-planning!

  • Visit a College! Even if you just visit a college here in Pierce County, you won't regret stepping on campus to learn more about what college life is about.  So, take the time to visit a college today or plan a trip to visit a college out of state over soon.

  • PSAT/NMSQT Scores: All PSAT/NMSQT scores should be released to your student's College Board account.  Your student will receive a paper copy at school this week, but if you are wanting the digital version, be sure to create or verify your CollegeBoard account.

Class of 2025

  • HOBY Leadership Seminar for sophmores ONLY! Each spring, 10,000 high school sophomores from across the country participate in one of HOBY’s 70+ State and Virtual Leadership Seminars to develop their leadership skills and learn how to apply them to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace, and community. Learn more about this important leadership conference by visiting their website. Mrs. Reinmuth will submit nominations if your student is interested in attending (Additional Fees apply). LAST DAY FOR NOMINATIONS IS DECEMBER 16.

  • Keep Your Grades Up!  If you are planning to attend college in the future, don't let your grades start slipping now!  Remember, everything that you do now counts towards your future college admissions, so make sure to keep up on your classwork.

Class of 2026

  • Community involvement: Now is the time to get involved!  Find a spot to volunteer and start being consistent with your volunteer time.  Don't forget to document your hours in the high school office!  You won't regret spending the time in your community as well as building your resume for college.

College Essays - Struggling to write "the perfect essay"?  Read this blog post from author Patrick O'Connor with some "College Essay Advice for Seniors".  
  • Did you know you can explore future careers based on what kind of eduction  your want to pursue after high school, or by pay level, or a multitude of other options?  Check out the Occupational Outlook Handbook through the US Bureau of Labor Statistics for more information. 

  • Thinking of taking a Gap Year?  The Gap Year Association has some great ideas of things to do to move you forward during your gap year.  While I don't recommend having to pay to join their association, they do have some good ideas and links to some great opportunities. Learn more here.

  • Did you know you can still get financial aid for a trade school? Click here to learn more.
  • GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship: This $10,000 renewable scholarship opportunity-- up to $40,000 per recipient-- is open to high school seniors nationwide who showcase leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship. Recipients also join the Reagan Academy network of exceptional students and young professionals who desire to lead, serve, and have a positive impact on their communities. Want to Play Sports in College? 
Learn about the two different athletic associations here.  If you are planning to play sports post high school you may want to register with both associations and increase the numbers of colleges who will see you and connect with you as an athlete.  
Students can also visit the NCAA and create an account and find out more about eligibility requirements by visiting the NCAA Eligibility Center.  
The new 2022-2023 NCAA Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete was just released!  If you plan to play sports after high school, make sure to take a look.  

Volunteer Hours!

Did you volunteer this summer?  Work at a SCA sports camp? Or help out at your church's VBS? Don't forget to turn your hours into the front office.  You can either complete this form or have your volunteer organizer send an email to tjones@soundchristianacademy.org (it can't come from the student or the parent).  Remember, all high school students are required to have the following number of volunteer hours:

Seniors (20 hours)
Juniors (15 hours)
Sophomores (10 hours)
Freshmen (5 hours)
