Buddha Day Celebration
Thursday, April 20, 6:00 p.m., Dinner at 7:15 p.m., Cannon Chapel Sanctuary
All are invited to join the celebration of Buddha’s life and teachings with the Buddhist and interfaith communities at Emory University and Atlanta. Popularly known as Buddha Jayanti Vesak/Vaisakhi/Visakha Full Moon Day commemorates the birth, enlightenment and final passing of the Buddha in the Theravada Tradition. We will celebrate this occasion with traditional Buddhist chants, Dharma reflections and a communal vegetarian meal.

Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir Spring Concert
Saturday, April 15, 7:00 p.m., Cannon Chapel
Join the Emory University Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) and the Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir (VOIS) for our annual Spring Concert. Dinner will be served immediately following the concert.
VOIS offers a space for soul healing and reflection through worship music of many different Christian genres. Parking is free on Saturdays at Emory’s Oxford Road and Peavine parking lots.

Drawing on a variety of disciplinary lenses, Emory faculty Dr. Alicja Podbielska and Dr. Ofra Yeglin will reflect, in conversation with Tam Institute Director Dr. Miriam Udel, on how the memory of the Holocaust is encoded in history and culture in Europe, Israel, and the Americas.

Community Gathering for the People of Ukraine

Emory Ramadan 2023
March 22 - April 21, 2023
Weeknight Iftar Prayers and Dinner
The Muslim month of Ramadan will span March 22-April 21, 2023. During this time, Emory’s Muslim community will be observing with daily fasting from dawn through the sunlight hours and nightly iftar communal prayers and dinner. On Atlanta campus, weeknight prayer and dinner will occur at Cannon Chapel with gathering at about 7:45 p.m., followed by prayer and then dinner under the tent next to Cannon Chapel. Saturday and Sunday prayers and dinner will occur at the Emory Student Center. Weeknight iftars are hosted by OSRL, MSA, GMSC, Emory Muslim Alumni, and several Emory Schools, divisions, and units.
Muslim students do not need to RSVP, but guests should register by emailing religiouslife@emory.edu.
OSRL in the News: When a chapel echoed with Tyagaraja kritis
A recent article from TheHindu.com highlighted last month's Carnatic Music Concert in Cannon Chapel. The piece spotlights the musicians and vocalist, Shiv Subramaniam, Sruti Sarathy, and Arvind Narayan, and the pieces they played. One composition by Subramaniam expressed solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement through Carnatic Music and came out of "a desire to express our grief over the events that had taken place, and also, more than ever, a responsibility to clarify the values to which our music should speak: resistance against oppression, plurality, friendship, community-building, and justice."

"Time to Pause" Sound Self-Care During Finals Week

Join sound practitioner Noni Keyton for a sound bath at Emory. RSVP here. To prepare for a relaxing sound bath experience, please do the following:
1. Arrive a few minutes early. Late arrivals can be disruptive for other participants and the sound practitioner.
2. Attend the sound-bath session in its entirety. Which is usually between 45 minutes to an hour.
3. Once arriving be sure to turn all electronic devices to the off position.
4. Come hydrated! Sound waves move faster through water.

Earth Month Recycling Day at Emory Point is a daylong event that invites the public to dispose of unwanted household items, providing a chance for local community members to recycle hard-to-recycle items.
Items collected range from textiles, games/toys, kitchen materials, and furniture to paints, aerosols, batteries, bulbs, and tires.

Creative Justice Exhibit - Woodruff Library

Emory’s Arts and Social Justice Fellows Program, which pairs talented Atlanta artists with Emory professors, has yielded vivid and creative pieces that are on exhibit through May 13 in the Schatten Gallery at Emory’s Woodruff Library. Make plans to visit “Creative Justice: A Celebration of Emory’s Arts and Social Justice Fellows Program” (details and hours can be found here). This exhibit provides a survey of the work the ASJ fellows and faculty did to help students translate their learning into creative activism in the name of racial justice.

Great Lent

Tradition: Christianity-Orthodox
In Orthodox churches, the first day of Lent marks the beginning of the Great Fast, the final six weeks of a 10-week period leading up to Holy Week and Easter (Pascha). In the churches that follow the Gregorian calendar, Lent is a six-week observance (40 days excluding Sundays) beginning with Ash Wednesday and culminating in Holy Week. It is a time of repentance and sacrifice in preparation for Easter.

Tradition: Islam
The Holy Month of Ramadan is the month of fasting during which Muslims who are physically able do not eat or drink from the first sign of dawn until sunset in honor of the first revelations to the Prophet Muhammad. The evening meal is celebrated with family.
Passover (Pesach)

Tradition: Judaism
Passover commemorates the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. It is celebrated for eight days with special prayers and symbolic foods at home, starting with the Seder, a ritual meal that re-enacts that ancient deliverance and emphasizes the freedom of the Jews under the guidance of God. The first two and the last two days are holidays.  
Holy Thursday/Maundy Thursday

Tradition: Christianity-Orthodox
Commemorates the institution of the Lord's Supper/the Eucharist by Jesus prior to his arrest and execution. "Maundy" is derived from the Latin text of John 13:34, in which Jesus gives a mandatum novum ("new commandment"). The date observed by Protestants and Roman Catholics differs from the date observed by Orthodox Christians.
