Our very own Andrew Haggerty, Director of First Year, Parent & Supporter Programs, along with Jenny Hall-Jones, Vice President for Student Affairs, and Kyle Boone, Director of Housing and Residence Life, joined President Mantella during a Parent Reception in Pontiac, Michigan last week. They all had the opportunity to meet with supporters to share some of the exciting things going on at the university.
Parents and supporters of incoming students — we look forward to seeing you at New Student Orientation this summer. And don’t forget to save the date for Family Weekend September 15-17! Have a wonderful summer!

Prioritizing Mental Health this Summer |
|
|
Happy (almost) summer, to all of our GV supporters and families! Here is a quick reminder that the University Counseling Center has mental health resources that your students can use all summer long, from anywhere in the country.
* Togetherall peer mental health support
* Mental health screenings
* Online workshops
* Telehealth services
* And more
If your student is looking for a clinician near home, they can visit the GVSU Community Provider Database for clinicians in West Michigan or Psychology Today for clinicians across the United States. Both allow students to search by insurance, area of specialty, therapeutic approach, etc.
We hope that everyone is able to prioritize their mental health in the coming season, and that both you and your student enjoy a safe and happy summer.

Building a Healthier World Together |
Student Health Services celebrated Public Health Week (April 3-9) and World Health Day (April 7) earlier this month, and wanted to take a moment to reflect on the importance of public health and its impact on our lives. Here are some simple steps that we’re encouraging the GVSU community to take to promote public health and build a fairer, healthier world. Together, we can make a difference!
Get vaccinated: Vaccines are a safe and effective way to prevent infectious diseases and protect ourselves and those around us.
Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands regularly, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and avoid touching your face.
Eat a healthy diet: Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and limit sugary and processed foods.
Exercise regularly: Physical activity is essential for maintaining good health and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
Protect the environment: Reduce your carbon footprint, conserve energy and water, and recycle and dispose of waste responsibly.
If your student has questions or needs to connect with a professional about their health and wellness, remind them to visit the Campus Health Center (CHC), the Injury Care Clinic (ICC), the Recreation and Wellness website, the University Counseling Center (UCC) on the Allendale Campus, and the Family Health Center (FHC) in downtown Grand Rapids.

The Tutoring and Reading Center |
We’re hiring!
The Tutoring and Reading Center (TRC) is now hiring tutors for the 2023-24 academic year! If your student is passionate about learning, enjoys helping people, and is looking for a flexible on-campus job (that looks great on your resume) then a position in the Tutoring and Reading Center might be the right fit. We are hiring tutors in a variety of courses and for SLA or PASS facilitators. Visit our website to learn more!
Spring/summer semester hours
Did you know the Tutoring and Reading Center is open during the spring and summer semesters?! Tutors will be available in-person and online on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 am to 4 pm starting May 16, 2023. Students can make an appointment in Navigate or by calling us at 616-331-3451.
The TRC is on the move!
The Tutoring and Reading Center will be moving to Henry Hall 112 for the fall 2023 semester! Construction on our new location will take place this summer and we will move in after the end of the summer semester. This move makes our services more accessible and visible to students, allowing us to serve more students and expand our services. Look for more information at the start of the fall semester!

Supporting Your Student During Their Job Search |
|
|
As the end of the semester quickly approaches, students are often applying for internships, part-time jobs, or their first full-time position. Here are five ways to support your student during their job search:
• Review their resume & cover letter for any mistakes.
• Connect your student with your professional network.
• Practice interview questions together.
• Engage in conversations about your student’s career aspirations.
• Encourage your student to seek out career resources like the Work Like a Laker Podcast.
Before asking your student, “Do you have a job lined up?”, try these steps to help them navigate their career path.

Thinking about taking summer classes? Now is the time to enroll in courses and complete the Spring/Summer Application in order to be considered for financial aid for the summer. Once you complete this application, we will use the information from your current year FAFSA to determine your financial aid eligibility for summer classes. If you are a Federal Pell Grant recipient and have not submitted your 2023-2024 FAFSA, please do so now as you may be eligible for summer Pell Grant. The tuition payment deadline for spring/summer is Friday, April 28 at 5:00 pm.
The state of Michigan priority deadline for filing the 2023-2024 FAFSA has been extended! If you haven’t already done so, be sure to file the FAFSA for next academic year as soon as possible. We encourage using the IRS data retrieval tool to pull 2021 tax information, to make the process even easier.
If you have questions, please contact the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.
