Duke Clinical Trial Gets Alfonzo Grafton Dancing Again
"It's just been an unbelievable journey from where I was before I found out about the cancer to where I am today."
When Durham native Alfonzo Grafton was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and given two years to live, he feared the worst. But a clinical trial at the Duke Cancer Institute, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), changed everything. The experimental medication targets a protein that weakens the immune system’s ability to fight tumors--and for Grafton, the results were remarkable. His tumor shrank, his strength returned and today he’s back to dancing, deejaying and enjoying time with his family--living proof of how federally supported research at Duke saves lives.
Grafton's treatment was supported by the NIH.
