Dear Gulls,
We are excited to launch our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging Newsletter dedicated to the importance of “Belonging” on our campus. Our goal is to shed light on how important it is for every student to feel valued and included in our community, regardless of their background, culture, or religion.
As a college community, we recognize how much each person brings to the table, and our differences should be celebrated rather than used as dividers. We want to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed in their academic and personal lives while feeling a sense of belonging at the Nest.
Throughout this newsletter, we will highlight the various programs, initiatives, and events that our campus has implemented to promote diversity and inclusivity. In upcoming editions, and in our first blog we plan to share stories from students and faculty members who have benefited from these efforts, and how it has impacted their experience on-campus. If you are interested in contributing to our blog and/or have information or programming you want to make sure is in the newsletter please contact us at dei@endicott.edu.
We hope that this newsletter will be a source of inspiration for all of us to strive for a more inclusive and welcoming campus environment and a way to stay updated on our efforts of fostering a vibrant and diverse community.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to making our campus an inclusive and welcoming place for all.
With Gratitude,
Brandi Johnson, Vice President & Chief Diversity Officer

This year, on campus, we will commemorate Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, on April 19. We are inviting the community to participate in a project which recognizes and celebrates family lineage. We invite members of the Endicott College community to be photographed with a salient object which represents your lineage. There will be opportunities to be photographed with an object that comes from or signifies your history and legacy. This will conclude with a public installation of these images in April during our observance of Yom HaShoah. Sign up to participate.

Center for Belonging Community Food Project
Did You Know...? More than 800 million people live every day with hunger or food insecurity as their constant companion and an estimated 40% of U.S. college students experience food insecurity. The Community Food Project is a new initiative located in the entrance hallway of the Center for Belonging. Though it is small (for now), it is mighty and will continue to grow. If you or anyone you know is in need of a snack or a meal, please feel free to stop by. If you are interested in donating to this initiative, we are looking for toiletries and any non-perishable foods.

Alternative Spring Break: Iceland
Over spring break, 16 Endicott community members traveled to Reykjavik, Iceland with CompassPath to participate in a service trip that provided the option of continuing to explore their own faith journeys. Reykjavik has been a refuge for immigrants and asylum-seekers from all over, and students were able to practice second-language skills and engage with and serve members of this community by hosting workshops for children. Reykjavik has a vibrant culture, welcoming society, and incredible landscape, and the group was even able to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights!

Black History Month Games & Equality T-Shirts
The Black History Month Games on February 1 kicked off Black History Month. The first 50 attendees of that night's women's and men's basketball games received a free "EQUALITY" t-shirt, created by the local Black-owned business AKA Embroidery. Proceeds from the sales of the shirts benefit a fund that supports students of color at Endicott College. T-shirts are still available! If you would like to purchase a shirt and/or contribute to the fund, please contact Anna Mei Gubbins.

Over 200 people were in attendance on February 9 at the Cleary Lecture Hall as Monti Washington, actor, poet, and writer delivered powerful spoken word poetry and engaged the community in conversation. Washington ended his talk with advice to student leaders at Endicott. “Being open and being yourself is so very important. I find that when you share your story, your struggles, and your troubles, it connects with other people,” he said. “Hold yourself accountable, have goals, be able to listen, and always be willing to learn.”
