A Season of Hurricanes and Wildfires Is Upon Us. Are We Prepared?
As disasters grow more frequent and intense, Duke experts are advancing innovative approaches to help communities prepare, respond and recover more effectively. With support from new academic programs and federal partnerships, faculty are rethinking how engineers are trained, how insurance could better serve at-risk populations and how nature-based solutions can reduce disaster impacts. Community-based catastrophe insurance, being piloted in New York, offers fast, equitable payouts based on objective triggers like water levels. At the same time, Duke is strengthening emergency response training and promoting practical resilience strategies that center people, policy and preparedness.
