Cardiovascular research pioneer Inagami mourned
Vanderbilt University Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry Tadashi Inagami, who helped characterize the biochemical basis for hypertension, heart failure, and vascular disease, died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 13 after a brief illness. He was 92.

Conrad Wagner, professor emeritus of biochemistry who conducted foundational research in nutritional science at Vanderbilt for more than half a century, died March 13 in Nashville. He was 93.

Nancy Carrasco (Molecular Physiology and Biophysics) has been named the 2023 SEC Faculty Achievement Award winner from Vanderbilt University.

Sanders promoted to vice dean
Chuck Sanders (Biochemistry) was promoted to vice dean of Basic Sciences. In this position, he will work directly with Dean John Kuriyan and will retain his responsibilities as associate dean for research.

Renã Robinson (Chemistry) was awarded the inaugural Marie Maynard Daly Award from The Protein Society for her work on mass spectrometry-based proteomics.

James Crowe Jr. (Pediatrics) received the Building the Foundation Award from Research!America for his team’s work with human monoclonal antibodies and COVID-19 vaccine contenders.

Emeson awarded IRSF grant
Ronald Emeson (Pharmacology) received a 2022 Innovation Award from the International Rett Syndrome Foundation. Emeson’s project focuses on RNA-editing for repairing mutations in Rett Syndrome.

Wenhan Zhu (Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology) received a grant from the G. Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Foundation for his work to improve gut inflammatory diseases.

O’Connor’s dissertation chosen as best
James O’Connor, a 2022 Ph.D. graduate from the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, received the 2023 Larry Sandler Award from the Genetics Society of America. This international award is presented to a recent graduate with the best Ph.D. dissertation on Drosophila.

Bastarache assumes new role
Julie Bastarache (Medicine) has been appointed assistant vice president for clinical and translational scientist development at VUMC. In this role, she will work to support early-career scientists and establish initiatives for mid-career scientists.

Hinton to serve on boards
Antentor Hinton Jr. (Molecular Physiology and Biophysics) accepted an appointment to serve on the Endocrine Society Board of Directors Scientific Statements Subcommittee. The three-year term will begin at ENDO 2023. Hinton has also joined the Advanced Biology editorial board.
