Psychology student Florencio Gobellan, Mr. UTA, co-president of UTA Ambassadors, and UTA’s 2023 homecoming king, represents the College of Science on the student senate. He also participates in La Sociedad Hispánica, the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students, and the Hispanic Leadership Council.
“Getting involved was the best decision I have ever made,” Gobellan says. “I always tell freshmen that college is what you make it. If you put yourself out there and go outside of your comfort zone by joining student organizations and celebrating with the University at events, it will make your college experience a lot better.”
Gobellan has explored a wide range of interests at UTA. He is passionate about excelling in his student leadership responsibilities as well as the research projects he participates in. Most recently, he served as a summer intern in the McNair Scholars Program, researching how depression affects brain connectivity for children with epilepsy.
One message that Gobellan wants to share with students, especially first-generation students like him, is to find a sense of belonging in their University by joining student clubs or pursuing other areas of interest.
He says, “As a first-generation student, there may be times when you feel like you don’t deserve to be here, or you wonder what you’re doing here. My words of encouragement are that you do deserve to take up space here. UTA chose you for a reason. This is your community. This is your school. Take advantage of what your University has to offer because you deserve to be here. Get involved in something you’re interested in, whether that is research or a spirit organization."
