"For spring break this year, I finally got the chance to head over to Ecuador and catch up with my long-distance bestie. Our story is pretty unusual — we actually met back in 2018 during Model United Nations in New York City and became very close in only five days we spent together. After that, I came back to Italy to complete a bachelor's degree, and she returned to Ecuador. However, we stayed tight, chatting on FaceTime and texting each other constantly for the past six years. When I moved to the U.S. for grad school, I figured it would be easier to meet up, but then, the whole pandemic craziness hit, and our plans got dashed. But finally, this past spring, I made it happen and booked a trip to Ecuador. I stayed with my friend and her family in Quito, her hometown, and then we explored Cuenca together. It was unreal because despite all those years and miles apart, it felt like nothing had changed between us. It was definitely one of the most amazing experiences!!"
– Martina Caretta, Doctoral Candidate,
International and Multicultural Education, Class of 2027
