CROPS & SOILS

Winter Camelina Workshop

Columbus: March 19, 2026

Join us March 19 at Club 60 to learn from Extension research on if a camelina cover crop can run a compromise in preventing nitrate leaching while reducing yield drag on the following corn crop. Hear experiences in planting and management from fellow farmers. Anna Teeter from Cargill will also join us to talk about future potential for cash cropping camelina with Cargill's camelina oilseed program.

Optimizing No-Till Soybean Planted Into a Cereal Rye Cover Crop

Acreage of soybean planted into a cereal rye cover crop has continued to increase, citing benefits including reduced soil erosion and weed pressure—in addition to monetary programs available to producers implementing cover crops. This research's goal is to take a holistic view of soybean planted into a cereal rye cover crop by testing the effects of various treatments on soybean seed yield and cover crop biomass, including: cereal rye termination timing, nitrogen rate on the cover crop, soybean maturity group—as well as measure the effect of seed and soil-applied biologicals and/or stimulants.

 Frost Seeding

A timely episode from the archives! March is mud month in Wisconsin. While this season may not be particularly pretty on the eyes, the freeze and thaw of the soil presents farmers with an opportunity to seed small-seeded plants like clovers into a fall-established wheat crop. The benefits are numerous: weed control, diversity, nitrogen for the following corn crop, forage and grazing opportunities. We cover it all with Jefferson County farmer Scott Schultz.

DAIRY & LIVESTOCK

Training Pays Off in the Parlor & Your Pocket (Increase Milk Quality)

Dairy operations today depend on well-trained employees to consistently produce high-quality milk. Yet many farms face workforce challenges such as high turnover, language differences, limited formal education, and employees who are new to agriculture. These realities make structured, ongoing training not optional but essential. Clear expectations, repetition, and hands-on training and evaluation directly influence how cows are milked and cared for. Because milk quality and udder health are closely tied to daily routines, investing in employee training, especially around a consistent, standardized milking procedure, is one of the most effective ways to reduce mastitis, meet processor standards, and protect farm profitability.

Trainer Certification Program: Milk Quality From the Udder World

Designed for those who train dairy farm teams, the Milk Quality From the Udder World (MQUW) course provides practical tools and knowledge to improve milk quality and udder health. Participants will learn how to explain the “why” behind best milking practices, coach their teams in consistent routines, and develop the skills needed to prevent mastitis and achieve high-quality milk together. The Milk Quality From the Udder World (MQUW) certification is a comprehensive trainer program created by the University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension.
