Moving From Community Engagement Into Synthesis

We’re at a critical juncture in the development of the Dane County Food Action Plan. After months of engaging with the community to gather insights, we’re now preparing to transition from the community engagement phase of the food plan to data collection, analysis, and writing the final food plan document. As such, there are no upcoming in-person, community-engagement events.

However, our surveys are still a great opportunity for community members and food producers to provide their input! We encourage you to share these surveys far and wide with your networks. We’ve received a great number and variety of responses thus far, and we thank you for taking the time to participate!

Key Updates From the Emergency Food Sector

In some ways, access to food in Dane County is a strength of our community. We have an abundance of agencies who define their mission as increasing access to food for everyone in Dane County. However, in other ways, our access to food remains a challenge. The inefficiencies we observe in other sectors become magnified when working with people on limited incomes and for whom challenges will present first and worst.

Food Insecurity in Dane County

Dane County, a powerhouse of agricultural production in the United States and the fastest-growing county in Wisconsin, is also home to many people that may not know when or where they will have their next meal.

The high cost of living, barriers to access, and lack of awareness of available resources often makes food one of the first things to get scaled back when money is tight. People in food-insecure households worry about running out of food without having money to buy more, cut back on the size of meals, or skip meals.

This summary and the connected report outlines the scale of food insecurity in Dane County, describes some of the consequences for health and community wellbeing, and offers a framework for a food-secure community.
