   UNT JOINS THE AMERICAN
UNT officially entered the American Athletic Conference on July 1 and all Mean Green athletics teams will compete in the league beginning this fall!
“Joining The American is another example of UNT’s commitment to excellence and is an exciting new beginning for us,” UNT President Neal Smatresk says.
Five other new members — UAB, UTSA, Rice, Charlotte and FAU — transitioned at the same time as UNT. The six universities join East Carolina, Memphis, Navy (football only), South Florida, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State (basketball and Olympic Sports only) – to bring The American’s membership to 15 schools.

   BEAT THE HEAT
Texas is heating up, so make sure while you're having your summer fun in the sun that you're also staying cool and hydrated. An estimated 80% of U.S. adults are mildly dehydrated, making it easier to get heat exhaustion. While temperatures are high — and expected to be in the 100s again next week — the heat index calculates how hot it really feels to the human body, which in some cases can be more than 10 degrees higher. Drinking plenty of water, wearing sunscreen and taking breaks from being outdoors for long periods of time can all help prevent heat exhaustion. Find out more ways to avoid heat-related illnesses

   JOB SCAMMERS
The UNT Career Center wants students to beware of job scammers this summer. There has been an increasing number of emails where scammers pose as recruiters or UNT employees and may provide a form to fill out or ask for personal information. Protect yourself from scams by keeping confidential information safe. Never pay for the promise of a potential job and always research the position or person contacting you. Email the Career Center with any questions at career.center@unt.edu or call them at 940-565-2105 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

   MEAN GREEN MISS TEXAS!
Congratulations to Ellie Breaux, former North Texas Dancer, who was crowned Miss Texas 2023! She earned her bachelor’s in marketing from UNT in May. As the daughter of a Houston police officer, she hopes to use her platform to promote her “Cops in the Community” initiative to bridge the gap between police officers and local communities. Ellie will represent Texas in the 2024 Miss America pageant. We couldn’t be prouder!
