UTA will celebrate the accomplishments of its newest Maverick alumni with ceremonies Friday, May 10, at Globe Life Field in Arlington. Each ceremony will be approximately two to two and a half hours. Graduates should plan to arrive at Globe Life Field 75 minutes before their ceremony. The doors will open 60 minutes before each ceremony for guests.

Don’t miss the MavGrad Celebration, a fun, family-friendly, free event where UTA’s graduating students can celebrate with their friends and family. Come to Brazos Park on Thursday, May 9, at 6 p.m. for food, drinks, music by The Inspiration Band, photo opportunities, and festive activities. The graduating class of 2024 will be recognized with a celebratory toast, and graduating students can stop by the Alumni Relations table to receive their first UTA alumni T-shirt while supplies last.

| Globe Life Field bag policy
|
With a goal to enhance public safety and the guest experience at Globe Life Field, a clear bag policy is in full effect for all events at Globe Life Field. For commencement guests, all bags and purses must be soft-sided and not exceed 16 inches long by 16 inches wide by 8 inches tall. Backpacks are prohibited, except for single-compartment drawstring bags that do not exceed 16 inches long by 16 inches wide by 8 inches tall. All bags are subject to search before entering the ballpark.

| Renegades pregame sideline passes
|
UTA students can submit their email addresses and complete a waiver for a chance to win pregame sideline passes to the United Football League Arlington Renegades home game at Choctaw Stadium on Saturday, May 11, at 12 p.m., which will be televised on ESPN. In the "who is the account holder" section, students can type “UTA Student.” Winners will be emailed information on where to pick up pregame sideline passes.

The UTA men’s tennis team concluded its season with a first-round loss in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament to the University of Oklahoma. The Mavericks finished with a 12-8 overall record after securing their second consecutive Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships.

Steam service outage planned
|
The Thermal Energy Plant has planned its annual outage of campus steam service for inspection and repair. The outage is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. on Sunday, May 12. Normal operations should resume by 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. During this period, the buildings served by the Thermal Energy Plant will be without hot water and steam (this includes heated water for the swimming pool). Under the direction of Christopher Curcuruto, director of opera, voice students from the UTA Department of Music and musician Boeun Kim performed an outreach recital last week at the Brookdale Pecan Park senior living community. The students offered a program of art song, melodie, lieder, canciones, sacred, and operatic works.

UTA Opera recently wrapped its spring production of Jacques Offenbach’s five-act French grand opera, The Tales of Hoffmann. The production was directed by Christopher Curcuruto and music directed and accompanied on piano by Professor Jing Ling-Tam. UTA Opera’s chorus was augmented by members of the University Singers.

| Student links worm behavior to brain disease
|
Hannah Selvarathinam, an undergraduate student in the Honors College, worked with Assistant Professor Piya Ghose to study cell death, brain health, and behavior. Selvarathinam went on to write her thesis on the subject and to author a new peer-reviewed publication detailing the genes affecting worm behavior that also are relevant to neurological disease in humans.

| Student earns DOD scholarship
|
Nolan Gutierrez, a doctoral student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, received a prestigious Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation scholarship from the U.S. Department of Defense. Gutierrez will use the scholarship to build upon research he started last year during an internship with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command.
