Grad's career plans combine law and mental health

Izabella Russell joined a network of 270,000-plus Maverick alums at commencement last Friday. Her next stop is Baylor Law School, where she will continue to prepare for her dream job of running a NeuroLaw clinic. Russell, whose father is a sergeant in the Fort Worth Police Department, said her parents influenced her interest in law.

CONHI grad ready to make a difference

Jessica Douglas took a decade-long break to raise her children and train as a doula. In 2019, she decided to return to school. Douglas graduated with her Master of Public Health degree last week. She plans to draw on her lived experience as a patient and provider to help others.

The winner of the graduation cap contest was Zoe Hartis, who made her favorite Marvel character, Wanda, the focal point of her cap design to highlight her passions for psychology and art. America Guillen Padilla and Kristy Garcia won second and third place, respectively.

| Maverick mom finished homework while in labor

Kelly Meek celebrated her first Mother's Day two days after graduating with her master’s degree. When Meek’s daughter Sarala arrived in September 2023, her hospital “go bag” included diapers, clothes for the newborn, and a laptop so Meek could complete class assignments from the delivery room.

In order to support the Life Science Building renovation project, a domestic hot and cold water outage will be required in the Central Library, Life Science Building, and University Hall. This outage will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 17, and last until approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. Restrooms in the buildings will not be available for use. No other building utilities will be affected by this outage.

| Sharing a workplace and a classroom

A group of 28 city of Fort Worth employees graduated last week from UTA’s Master of Public Administration cohort program. The students were able to learn skills that will help them better serve the Fort Worth community.

The Texas Tribune's new summer fellow

Juan Salinas II, a senior majoring in journalism at UTA, will be a part of the Texas Tribune’s fellowship program that allows college students to tackle real-world projects, contribute ideas, participate in workshops and training sessions, and collaborate with their peers. Salinas will serve as the summer Dallas Press Club Foundation reporting fellow based in Arlington.
