Tu B’Shvat isn’t just a holiday, it’s a learning experience across all subjects at Charleston’s only Jewish Community Day School! We’re celebrating cross-curricular connections between Tu B’Shvat and general studies - not just in Judaics but throughout our classrooms. Here are some of the ways our students are exploring trees, nature, and sustainability in creative and meaningful ways:
For Tu B’Shevat, our Early Childhood students explored the beauty of nature through a dynamic, cross-curricular approach. They created tree blossom process posters to observe seasonal changes, planted seeds in the Germination Station to learn about growth and sustainability, and tasted a variety of fruits to connect with the traditions of the holiday. Partnering with older student leaders, they helped clean out garden boxes, fostering responsibility and teamwork. Through pinch pot creations for carrot seedlings, birthday cards to the trees, murals, and tree bark rubbings, our preschoolers expressed their learning through art and exploration - deepening their appreciation for the natural world.
Lower school students brought Tu B’Shevat to life through art, science, storytelling, and hands-on experiences. Kindergarten explored tree structure with 3D art, planted seeds, and sang traditional Tu B'Shvat tunes in Hebrew and English. First and second graders created seasonal tree projects, watercolor art, and poetry, while third and fourth graders combined creative writing - "If I Were a Tree" with Tu B'Shevat word problems and building "Ecosystems in a Bottle." They also led by example, helping EC4 clean out garden beds. Through cross-curricular learning, our students deepened their connection to nature and Jewish tradition.
During their Judaic extracurricular period with Mr. Josh, middle schoolers practiced kitchen skills by turning fruit into creative shapes. Chef Marcie Rosenberg's led a science experiment on acids and bases, using citrus juice to "cook" fish into ceviche. In Mrs. Mimran's class, 7th and 8th graders studied Bal Tashchit, the Jewish value of conserving resources. Students planted flowers with our longtime friend, Mrs. Ashley Kirshtein, and participated in a meaningful seder with our Shlichim, deepening their connection to the holiday and its themes.
During English and Social Studies, they explored trees as storytellers through research and creative writing:

Strong, Thirsty

Reaching, Growing, Anchoring

Descent, Foundation, Lineage, Soul

Healing, Honoring, Uniting

Ancient, Loyal
