|
|
Join us NEXT WEEK for the fourth event of our 2023-2024 lecture series titled, "Publicness."
Publicness refers to the power of architecture and design to shape our built environment for the benefit of society at large. It celebrates conditions of interaction, adaptability, collaboration, spontaneity, and openness.
Monday's lecture, titled "INSIDE/OUT: HOW NATURE OF PLACE & EXPERIENCE ARE RE-SHAPING STADIUMS," will be led by HCOA alumnus LANCE EVANS, on January 29th, 2024.
LANCE EVANS is venues design director, partner, and a principal at HKS. As a designer, he finds inspiration in the unique story of every project and conducts research on the surrounding context of site locations to consider the impact of his projects. His work includes pro baseball and football, collegiate and international venues. He was the lead architect on U.S. Bank Stadium and SoFi Stadium. Read more on Lance Evans...
Evans' lecture and Q&A will be held in the Gallery on the ground floor of the Huckabee College of Architecture. The event will also be streamed live via the Zoom information below.

Assistant Professor Dr. Asma Mehan, Neady Odour, and Associate Professor Dr. Sina Mostafavi have contributed a new book chapter titled "Socio-Spatial Micro-Networks: Building Community Resilience in Kenya” published in the book "Resilience vs Pandemics: Innovations in Cities and Neighborhoods." This chapter explores the critical role of micro-networks in building resilience within communities, particularly during crises like the Covid-19 pandemic.
In their focus on Nairobi, Kenya, the authors provide an analysis of resilience strategies both before and after the pandemic, showcasing the effectiveness of community-based approaches. These methods, deeply embedded in local culture and practices, prove vital in overcoming challenges through self-organization, collaboration, and mutual aid. The chapter offers strategies for bolstering resilience in marginalized communities, not just in Africa but globally.
The book, published by Springer Nature, is edited by Ali Cheshmehzangi, Maycon Sedrez, Hang Zhao, Tian Li, Tim Heath, and Ayotunde Dawodu. It sheds light on innovative methods and strategies to enhance urban resilience, particularly against pandemics, providing insights relevant to the fields of urban planning and socio-environmental justice.

⅜” is an experimental exhibition hosted at He Quasi-Design Lab at Charles Adam Studio Gallery. It is designed in collaboration between Assistant Professor Nero Chenxuan He and Visiting Assistant Professor Alex Yueyan Li from the University of Colorado, Denver. The exhibition prompts a reexamination of the traditional perspective on mortar's thickness, rooted in the ⅜” specification by the International Building Codes TMS 602, while also raising fundamental questions about its pivotal role as a binding agent during the 18th century in masonry construction.
Going beyond the confines of standardized masonry construction, the installation challenges the notion of mortar as a unit system, viewing instead its pasty nature as a form of spatiality. It posits mortar not only as a binding agent but as a legitimate building material capable of shaping new assembly possibilities. By delving into the chemical composition, labor processes, and construction sequences associated with mortar, the installation aims to articulate a design process that fosters a reciprocal and non-hierarchical relationship between the site of imagination and the site of construction.
