Images from the History of the Public Health Service; A Photographic Exhibit
|
The photographic exhibit, "Images from the History of the Public Health Service," consists of 165 photographs depicting people involved in the work of the Public Health Service (PHS) over much of its long history. For the most part they are fleeting images frozen in time by the lens of the camera, but they are symbolic of much more -- the spirit of a Federal agency whose mission focuses on care and service.

Federal quarantine is one of the United States’ earliest public health tools. Though early enforcement was housed in the Treasury Department to protect ports of entry, its core purpose was preventing the spread of infectious disease. Today, CDC Port Health Stations—formerly quarantine stations—reflect the evolution of public health toward a comprehensive approach that protects travelers, communities, and population health.
