HOUSE BUDGET COMMITTEE ADVANCES BUDGET RESOLUTION

The House Budget Committee adopted a budget resolution Thursday along party lines, 21-16. The vote paves the way for the full House to take up the resolution on the floor, with the possibility of the full Senate taking up its competing fiscal 2025 budget as soon as next week on the floor. As we covered in a previous digest, the Senate passed its resolution out of committee on Wednesday. Adopting the same budget resolution in both chambers is the necessary first step to writing a reconciliation bill.

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT CANCELS IES GRANTS AND CONTRACTS

The Trump administration has canceled nearly $900 million in contracts with the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and the College Scorecard remain operational.

HOUSE ED COMMITTEE ADVANCES DETERRENT ACT

The House Committee on Education and Workforce voted to advance the DETERRENT Act, which would require colleges to report gifts and contracts worth $50,000 or more from most foreign countries, down from the current $250,000 threshold.

TRUMP CABINET CONFIRMATION UPDATES

Since our last update on President Donald Trump's cabinet confirmations, three individuals have been confirmed to their positions:

Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Health and Human Services Secretary
Brooke Rollins, Agriculture Secretary

Several more cabinet nominees are in the midst of the confirmation hearing process, including Education Secretary nominee Linda McMahon.
