On Monday, February 10, the Emory University Chaplaincy helped to lead the campus in an Emory celebration of the life of US President and Emory Professor Jimmy Carter. The service included remarks from President Fenves and past Emory presidents, leaders from the Carter Center, and Emory faculty, chaplains, and musicians. The Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir also sang beautifully, and we were honored to be joined by Jason Carter and other Carter family and friends as we celebrated the life of this exemplary president and professor. On Friday, February 14, members of the Hindu Students Association and Sikh Students Association joined together under the leadership of Emory Hindu Chaplain Pandit Rajeev Persaud for a South Asian Sacred Music and Devotional Night at the Emory Interfaith Center. Pandit Rajeev offered remarks and students shared musical gifts on the harmonium, tabla and vocals. All present including faculty, staff, and students enjoyed a meal and celebrated the shared values and artistry of these great religious traditions. We look forward to more in the future.

On Sunday, February 16, the University Chaplaincy and the Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir under the direction of Mr. Maury Allums, held its annual Soul Food Gospel Fest in honor of Black History Month. Choirs, dance groups, and speakers from our campus and around the state gathered with an audience of 250 people to celebrate Black history in worship, the arts, and community. Many thanks to all who participated, and to Emory Campus Life Belonging, Community and Justice and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for their generosity.

Carlos Reads: A Selection of Jain Texts

In conjunction with Call and Response, Ellen Gough, associate professor in the Department of Religion, whose work focuses on ritual, sacred space, narratives, and material culture, will lead discussions over two evenings (March 17 and March 31), on a selection of writings on Jainism that explore historical texts, traditional stories, memoirs, and contemporary interpretations. Tibetan Mind Body Sciences Study Abroad Program

The Tibetan Mind/Body Sciences program in India is a five-week long study abroad opportunity that brings together the best of both western science and the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.  Participants meet leading spiritual teachers of the Tibetan tradition, often including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and engage in the ongoing dialogue between Tibetan Buddhism and modern science.  Course work includes the study of Tibetan culture, Tibetan medicine, Buddhist philosophy, contemplative practice, and secular ethics. Students also have direct interaction with Tibetan monks and nuns studying neuroscience, biology, and physics. The Atlanta Dream, in partnership with the King Center, invite college students in the Atlanta area to participate in the 2025 cohort of the “Emerging Dreamers: A Roundtable Conversation Focused on Transforming the Culture” program.

This immersive program will give students the opportunity to complete The King Center's Nonviolence365 Masterclass virtual training. The training helps students engage in the concepts of transforming culture and mobilizing student peer groups to address issues of social justice. and inequality. Students will also have the unique opportunity to earn volunteer hours at The King Center, participate in interactive workshops at the Atlanta Dream headquarters and will be invited to attend an Atlanta Dream home game! At the conclusion of the program, the students will also participate in a social justice roundtable discussion, in a conversation with Dr. Bernice King. The roundtable discussion, hosted at the King Center, will be open to the public and will give the students the opportunity to offer their insights and perspectives on mobilizing for change.
