How Duke Leaders Support Research at Duke and Beyond

Recognizing research as a public good, Duke University leaders are advocating for sustained federal investment while expanding support for researchers navigating a changing funding environment. Leaders like University President Vincent Price, School of Medicine Dean Dr. Mary Klotman and Pratt School of Engineering Dean Jerome Lynch are engaging policymakers at the state and national levels to emphasize how academic research drives lifesaving medical advances, technological innovation and economic growth. In addition, Duke has launched and expanded internal funding programs to help faculty bridge delayed grants, pivot projects and sustain critical work. Together, these efforts reaffirm Duke’s commitment to ensuring research continues to save, improve, and enrich lives in North Carolina and beyond.

How to Build a Brain

Duke researchers have identified a key process that helps the brain develop normally by removing excess connections early in life--a step that is critical for healthy sensory processing. When this process is disrupted, it may contribute to conditions such as autism and sensory processing disorders, which affect how people experience the world around them. By clarifying how the brain fine‑tunes itself after birth, the work brings scientists closer to understanding why these conditions arise and how they might be prevented or treated. The findings lay important groundwork for future therapies aimed at protecting or restoring brain function in children and across the lifespan.

Fort Bragg’s Tech Innovation Foundry Hosts Duke University

A group of Duke students and faculty recently visisted Fort Bragg’s Joint Innovation Outpost as part of a capstone experience for Duke’s Peace and War: the 21st Century course, gaining firsthand insight into how the Army adapts to emerging global threats. JR DeShazo Appointed Dean of Sanford School of Public Policy

JR DeShazo has been named the Joel L. Fleishman Dean of Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy, effective July 1. DeShazo joins Duke from the University of Texas at Austin, where he has served as dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs and led growth in enrollment, research funding and scholarly output.
