Even though college students are technically independent adults, that doesn’t mean they don’t need some support and encouragement along the way. Instructors are their primary interaction point at the U, and some small actions on your part can have big impacts on their success as a student.

Remind students about the Add/Drop Date and what it means. Tomorrow, Friday January 17 is the last day to add, drop, audit, or elect Credit/No Credit for courses without a potential tuition penalty. Ideally, students will have already had an assessment in your course and received a grade before that deadline, so they can align their expectations with the demands of the course.

If you have students who aren’t attending class, or aren’t submitting assignments, send them an email to let them know they are missed. Sometimes that small act on your part of reaching out can mean a lot to a student who is struggling or feeling overwhelmed.

 

Did you know there’s an easy way in Canvas to email students who have not submitted an assignment? Go to your Gradebook in Canvas and Click on an Assignment title. This will bring up three dots next to the title, and clicking on those will show a Menu. One of the menu items is to “Message Students Who”  -- this will allow you to send a direct message to students in the Canvas course who have yet to submit something.

The reclassification taskforce for the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement invites you apply to present your community partnership projects at the Community Engagement Showcase sponsored by Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Mitzi Montoya, Ph.D. and the new Senior Vice President for Health Sciences and CEO of University of Utah Health Bob Carter, M.D., Ph.D. 

Finalists will be chosen to give a 5 minute “lightning pitch” on their partnership work during the event. A total of $10,000 will be awarded to help continue great community engaged work happening at the University of Utah. Applications will be reviewed utilizing this rubric developed in the context of the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, which seeks examples of “high-quality community engagement partnerships are mutually beneficial, reciprocal and asset-based.” University of Utah faculty and staff who apply are encouraged to include their community partners’ and students’ voices in both the application and pitch. This submission process is also a data collection method for us, as all submissions – regardless of whether they are included in the showcase – will be considered for inclusion in the application.

We ask that university community members please share this call widely and apply with any of your community-engaged projects HERE by January 21st. We encourage those who are interested to please review the rubric for this process prior to submitting. Finalists will be notified by January 31st and invited to pitch at the Community Engagement Showcase in late February.

The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is excited to announce the Education Series for Spring 2025.  The OUR Education Series includes topics of interest for undergraduate student researchers and their faculty mentors. These events are open to all and are designed specifically with undergraduate students in mind.  Faculty are welcome to incorporate these events into their classes and/or encourage their students to participate.
