UAH President Emeritus Altenkirch, wife honor Coach Stuedeman with softball endowment |
Coach Lorraine “Les” Stuedeman and her softball teams consistently deliver wins to UAH. A couple of longtime fans – UAH President Emeritus Dr. Robert Altenkirch and his wife, Beth – have created an endowment in Stuedeman’s honor to help keep those softball victories coming to UAH. Along with their initial lead gift, their continuing contributions and those of other donors, the endowment stands at $50,000.

College of Nursing researcher helping make future brighter for transplant patients |
Dr. Haley Hoy, a professor of nursing at UAH, is pursuing a longstanding passion for research in the field of transplantation. As a UAH alumna, she embraces the latest technologies pushing the field of transplantation forward, such as machine learning – she also enjoys sharing her passions through teaching.
“The beauty of working in transplantation is that it is constantly changing and advancing at a rapid pace,” Hoy says. “Currently, advances in the procurement of organs using animal models and continuing to advance our understanding of the complex human immune system appear to be at the forefront.”

UAH employees take Make-A-Wish Alabama Trailblaze Challenge to help critically ill children |
Dr. Jennifer Bail, associate professor in the College of Nursing, and Laurel Long, associate vice president, Human Resources, participated in the Make-A-Wish Alabama Trailblaze Challenge earlier this year. The event raised more than $1 million to make wishes come true for children with critical illnesses.
“I'm already thinking about how can I train differently and get better prepared for next year,” says Long, who was surprised this year when her fellow hikers gave her the Spirit of Trailblazer Award. “Just try it. You have nothing to lose other than going on a few hikes and meeting some great people."

UAH hosted retired four-star General Paul M. Nakasone, former commander of the United States Cyber Command and former leader of the U.S. National Security Agency, as part of UAH’s 2024 Distinguished Lecture Series on Oct. 1. The event showcased the speaker’s extensive expertise in national security, geopolitics and cyber defense technology.

Since its inaugural graduating class in 1974, the UAH College of Nursing has grown to more than 8,000 alumni, each contributing to a talented and compassionate health care workforce in North Alabama and beyond.
Throughout Fall 2024 and Spring 2025, the UAH College of Nursing is celebrating its 50th anniversary with the Golden Anniversary event series, culminating in the Golden Gala on April 5, 2025, at the Jackson Center!

The UAH Department of Music, Theatre and Film will kick off the holiday season with Holiday Jazz, a festive evening featuring food, drinks and a variety of performances by students and faculty. The event will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 10, on the UAH campus.
