2020-2021 RCN Upcoming Deadlines

2021-2022 RCN Contract Application

The 2021-2022 START RCN Contract Application and support materials are available in a Google Folder linked on the START website. The application is due June 30, 2021.

Summer 2021 Special Project Funding Opportunity

As a result of programming changes due to COVID-19 restrictions during the school year, START is able to offer a unique opportunity for RCNs/ISDs/Districts to apply for funding for special summer projects this year, to assist in preparing for implementation of evidence-based practices, training, coaching, expansion of peer to peer programs, or similar activities for the upcoming school year. Information about this opportunity and the application for support is available on the START website.

2021-2022 Intensive Training and Resources

As a state-wide project funded by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), Office of Special Education (OSE), we are working to build capacity across Michigan. Through our partnerships with Regional Collaborative Networks (RCN), we have provided training across the state, and through our project website, we offer access to many resources and tools. In the past year, due to the requirement of virtual education, we have all learned how to be more efficient and flexible in delivering training by leveraging technology and disseminating materials in a new way, and as we all become busier, we are mindful of the time and capacity of those participating in training. As part of START’s continued evolution, it is imperative to be agile and continuously adapt systems, content, and methods of delivery to the changing environment and needs of the field. In line with these goals, expect to see a wider range of modalities to receive information, training, and resources.

For the 21-22 school year, we are focused on reaching a broader audience. This aligns with our goals of greater access and equity. Information about supporting our youngest learners will be provided through resources on the START website and a three-day, team-based Early Childhood Training series to be delivered once in the fall (virtually) and once in the spring (in-person, circumstances permitting). Applications to attend the fall session as a team will be available in August; applications to attend the spring session will be available at a later date. Numerous resources for supporting K-12 students will be available on the START website and a new K-12 training series will be offered through Kent CAN in Grand Rapids and we will continue to partner with Wayne RACE for K-12, year two. A BYF training series is not scheduled for next school year. As a team, we are considering how to best meet the needs of teams working with transition-age students. We will be adding more transition-focused resources for trainers and teams to access on the START website and plan for focused training on topics such as the discovery process.

We are grateful to all of the RCN representatives, START trainers, and START coaches who deliver training, resources, and coaching support within each region of the state. Through the new RCN application, you will have the flexibility to identify activities within each priority that meet the needs of young children all the way up to transition-age students. Thank you to all of the RCN representatives working with us to continue to expand access to practices and systems that make learning, socializing, and life better for our students.

RCN Gift and Logo Refresh

Our project has grown and evolved over the years. START looks much different than it did 20, 10 or even 5, years ago, and the START logo reflects those changes evolving with our project. As an extension of START that represents our project’s identity and voice, we want to give the RCN the same opportunity for a refresh. START would like to acknowledge and honor your work through either a table runner or a banner featuring your new logo:
  • 1 gift per ISD or 3 gifts for single county RCN:
    • (2) Custom Tabletop Retractable Banner (11.5” x18”)
    • (1) Custom Table Runner (36”)
    • (1) Custom Table Runner (60”)

Updated START-isms

In honor of our 20th anniversary celebration, we are debuting new and updated START-isms! These phrases, along with short descriptions, are START's guiding principles for supporting students with ASD. We have included graphics and posters for you to print, download, share, and display the START-isms. We invite you to read and explore our updated START-isms!

Accessibility and START Standards

START has created a page to provide tools to assist all those who create or disseminate materials or messages in print or electronically that represent START's brand or image. We invite our partners and trainers to explore this page to review accessibility guidelines and START formatting standards. More information, including START common PowerPoint slides and images, will be available soon.

Share your Story!

Our ask is simple. Please join us in our 20-year celebration by sharing your experiences and stories about working with START. We have also included a few writing prompts on the submission form for you to consider.

Training Webinars or Recorded Videos

Does your RCN have any training webinars or recorded videos that you are willing to share with others? START is seeking any publicly available training webinars or recorded videos to link on our website in order to make them available to a wider audience. If you have any webinars or videos to share, or questions related to this, please contact Kellie Fitzgerald
