Swim Meet Dos/Don’ts for Parents & Athletes

With our midseason meets approaching, our swimmers tend to shift their focus from the process of their training to the results of their performances. This brings on a wide range of emotions which often results in a decrease in their performance if not handled appropriately. Parents can also fall into this trap since they care for their swimmers and want them to perform to the best of their potential. Check out our Top 3 Swim Meet Dos & Don’ts for Parents and Swimmers as we gear up for the next two weekends of racing!
Additionally, if you have not watched the Kansas City Royals’ Not Good Enough video please do so before the next time you debrief with your swimmer after practice or a meet.

Meet Recaps

Gamecock Invitational

103 Senior YOTA athletes made the trip across state lines to Columbia, South Carolina November 15 - 17 to participate in the Gamecock Invitational. This meet is one of the rare meets to have a prelims/finals event format, but not be considered a championship meet, which gave our athletes a great idea to see where they were at in their training. It was a great success with a new YMCA national qualifier, two new YMCA National qualifying standards made and lots of finals swims that ultimately ended in lots of best times!  Congratulations to all YOTA athletes!

YOTA Turkey Classic

354 YOTA swimmers took over the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center for the Annual YOTA Turkey Classic on November 22-24. This was a fun and fast weekend that resulted in over 1,300 best times and over 500 new time standards! Our technique and race strategy execution was strong across the board. This was a great way to launch us into our midseason meets in December. Thank you to all of our YOTA parents who also took over the deck in their many volunteer positions. The power of all of the Purple People in action is truly unmatched!

2024 We Build People Annual Campaign

We are thrilled to report that the YOTA Swim Team has raised a total of $122,024 for the 2024 We Build People Annual Campaign! We have well surpassed our goal once again and we are so grateful to be able to use these funds to provide significant financial support for our community. The success of this year’s campaign was made possible by the leadership of Katie Womble and Katharine Hepburn, our WBP YOTA Chairs, and our many parent Site Liaisons. Thank you to everyone who campaigned, donated, and/or shared the mission of the YMCA with our community. Our world is a better place because of you! Funds are still being brought in so look forward to next month’s letter for a highlight of all swimmers who raised $500 or more!

SwimStrong Dryland Green Team

SwimStrong Dryland offers a leadership program for our athletes that helps with the development of teams and groups outside of the pool by incorporating leadership skills in their rising leadership and senior leadership programs. This year, the theme is “The Green Team”. The Green Team consists of “swaying the gray and removing the red”.  The green, gray and red traits revolve around certain habits that are developed, both in and out of the pool. Some of the traits include practice attendance, practice effort, engagement with your teammates, and following team rules, amongst others.  These are all things that are important in building a strong culture throughout a team. If there is a low practice attendance, the individual or group will be in the red. A high practice attendance for an individual or group will be in the green! While perfection is not the expectation, doing well in all of the categories can lead to a better environment and overall team experience!  Let’s turn the purple people green!
