Office Hours are a great opportunity to interact with your students, but it might not be the best time simply because your students avoid going. What can you do? 

Becky Supiano discusses some of the reasons why students don’t go to office hours and what to do about it. Many students feel intimidated or have the wrong idea about office hours.

Bonni Stachowiak offers some ideas to encourage students to join professors for office hours such as being welcoming to students and offering different options virtual hours and in-person meetings. Megan Condis gives you more ideas in this article making office hours matter. It is important to explain to your students what office hours are, where your office is, how often and why they should visit your office.

You could rebrand your office hours.Here is an example that gives students 3 different options with specific information about what to do during office hours: 5 min greetings, traditional meetings and working meetings.

You can share with your students this video about office hours expectations for faculty and students. Another option is to make your own video (5 minutes) to show your office and explain different reasons for students to talk to you during office hours.
