Communication Tips for Connecting with Your Loved One

Staying emotionally connected to your loved one, especially when life feels busy or when they are experiencing memory loss or stress, starts with simple, intentional communication.

Small shifts in how we speak, listen, and show up can make meaningful moments more frequent and fulfilling. To improve your connection, consider implementing the following communication strategies:

Be fully present: put away distractions, make eye contact, and let your loved one know you’re genuinely there. This quiet focus signals safety and respect, helping them relax into the conversation.

Use clear, gentle language: short sentences, a calm tone, and open-ended questions can make communication easier and more inviting. Instead of “Why did you do that?” try “Tell me more about this.” Phrases that guide rather than challenge often foster a deeper sense of connection.

Active listening: rather than preparing your response, intentionally slow down and listen for the feelings behind their words. A simple nod or “I hear you” can acknowledge their experience and build trust.

Use nonverbal cues: A warm smile, soft touch on the hand, or shared activity can sometimes speak louder than words.

Celebrate small moments: A shared laugh, a quiet walk, or a brief conversation can strengthen your bond just as much as long, heartfelt talks. What matters most is consistency and compassion.

Give these tips a try! With patience, your relationship and communication with your loved one can become even stronger.

Be Aware of Cyber Scams During Tax Season

As you begin to receive your tax documents, it’s important to remember to keep your information safe from cyber criminals. Take these precautions:

·         File early. This will ensure cyber criminals’ attempts to file a false return under your name are rejected if your return is already completed.

·         Never give or send any personally identifiable information, such as your credit card number, social security number, or password to unverified people or businesses.

·         Beware of smishing attempts. If you or a relative receives a text communication related to W-2 information, do not click on the link or respond.

·         Keep a careful eye on your credit card and debit card activity. Consider enrolling in a credit monitoring service.

·         Consider identity theft protection. Many identity theft protection services offer free trial periods.

Do You Have a 5-Star Rated Health Plan?

Now is a Great Time to Review Your Coverage

Many of us don’t think about our health plan beyond the Medicare Annual Open Enrollment Period. However, it’s important to regularly review your coverage, so you feel informed about your options and confident that your needs are being met.

Schedule a no-pressure health coverage review with your health insurance resource manager. Learn more about 5 Star rated Erickson Advantage plans and make sure you’re receiving the benefits you need and the peace of mind you deserve.

Call <443-297-3110>, TTY: 711, Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time or email <jennifer.simon@erickson.com>.

Plans are insured through UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company or one of its affiliated companies, a Medicare Advantage organization with a Medicare contract. Enrollment in the plan depends on the plan’s contract renewal with Medicare. Every year, Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5 Star rating system. The 5 Star rating applies to plan years 2021-2026. Community residents are not required to enroll in an Erickson Advantage plan. The community medical center also accepts other plans.
