Use the study cycle to prepare for each course. Preview course material before class, and attend each course with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Next, review your notes and assignments consistently throughout the week, and study in small increments rather than cramming or procrastinating at the last minute before quizzes and exams. The last step in the study cycle is to check your knowledge using flash cards or a study partner to assess your understanding of the course material.

Did you know that writing is one of the most powerful study tools there is? When you summarize a lecture in your own words, explain a concept on paper, or work through an argument in a draft, you’re actively processing and retaining information. IUP’s Kathleen Jones White Writing Center can help you put this into practice: writing tutors will work with you to elevate your notes by organizing your thinking, clarifying your understanding, and turning rough ideas into clear explanations and arguments. The more you write, the more you learn. We’re here to help at every stage.
