The Tempest

Women Power

Each of the four design areas in The Tempest is led by a beloved friend whose ideas have shaped our productions from site selection through opening night over decades. Meet Stephanie Mayer-Staley (Scenic Design) and Susan Tsu (Costume Design).

Steffi’s first Quantum show was I.D. in 2006, so we celebrate 20 years together, and she’s given us so much - TAMARA, The Electric Baby, Chatterton, that gorgeous Moon for the Misbegotten, and many more.

She’s Head of Design at Point Park University, and Pittsburgh is blessed with many designers who were once her students.

As a German, she is steeped in a European tradition of design and she’s a visual artist as well as a scenic designer. Steffi is the full package. I couldn’t have dreamed of some of the things sparked in her imagination and fully realized on Quantum’s stages.
Which leads us to the other full package.
Susan’s first Quantum show was Cymbeline in 2008 and thank goodness I was bold enough to ask her. The Bessie F. Anathan Professor of Design at CMU, her career is storied, with regular gigs at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Guthrie and some 45 other major American theaters. She designed the original Godspell and its international tour, and has so many accolades.
But she’s always regarded Quantum as seriously as any job she’s had, yielding us The Winter’s Tale, Collaborators, King Lear, Hamlet, and my beloved Chimerica for which she served as Art Director, touching every aspect.

I treasure them and thank them for a camaraderie that has sustained me more than I can say.
