What is Black History Month?

It's officially February, and the first of February marks the beginning of Black History Month. Press writers Lilly Gardner and Emma Milam researched this historical month's own history. Did you know the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (we'll just say ASALH from now on) selects a theme for each year's Black History Month? The 2024 theme is dedicated to African Americans and the arts.

In each issue this month, The Pony Press staff plans to share stories, history and resources that highlight community voices and provide opportunities to learn more about inspiring and world-changing heroes. We look forward to exploring black history in the arts.

Meet Mrs. King

Mrs. Coretta Scott King — you might recognize the last name "King." Coretta was married to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and she was dedicated to non-violent social change. She established The King Center in 1968. According to their website, "The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change ('The King Center') has been a global destination, resource center and community institution for over a quarter century... Nearly a million people each year make pilgrimage to the National Historic Site to learn, be inspired and pay their respects to Dr. King’s legacy."

This year, Microsoft partnered with The King Center to create an interactive timeline filled with photos, documents and video from Mrs. King's life and work. Click the image below to explore the timeline and content.
