A Yearlong Tribute to the USA |
Independence Day may be in the rearview window, but the United States’ 250th anniversary keeps marching on. The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission’s website, America250, includes a searchable calendar of events that are scheduled throughout the rest of the year, plus additional information. Ongoing events include The Great American Road Trip, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

As the years go by, the summer season seems to be getting hotter, especially in many states RVers like to travel. It’s best to stay informed and protect yourself from extreme temperatures. Here are a few reminders.
Hydration is key. According to the American Red Cross, drinking water can help prevent heat-related illness. On average, a person should drink about ¾ of a gallon of water daily (the amount varies by individual).
The Red Cross advises that people should avoid sugary, caffeinated, and alcoholic beverages on these hot days. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) agrees, indicating that such drinks can cause one to lose additional body fluid. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to begin drinking water; thirst indicates you already are dehydrated.
The Red Cross also suggests you make a plan to stay cool. Spend at least a few hours inside an air-conditioned area each day. If a power outage or other event should affect your primary source of cooling, make sure you know where you can go to cool down.
Other tips from the Red Cross: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing; learn first-aid and CPR skills; and monitor the local weather forecast.

Lincoln Memorial Undercroft Museum
|
Just prior to America’s 250th birthday, the U.S. Department of the Interior celebrated the opening of the new Lincoln Memorial Undercroft Museum, unveiling a 15,000-square-foot facility beneath the iconic memorial.
This project gives visitors access to the story of how the Lincoln Memorial was constructed. According to the Interior Department, “The new museum features immersive exhibits, refreshed content, tactile and audio elements, and enhanced accessibility features that allow visitors to engage with Lincoln's legacy and the memorial's history in new ways.”
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated the new visitor experience honors the memorial’s legacy by making it “accessible, engaging and inspiring for millions of visitors.”
The new museum opens a previously inaccessible space beneath the memorial and expands interpretation of the 16th U.S. president’s legacy. The project reflects the work of the National Park Service, engineers, architects, contractors, and exhibit designers, along with philanthropic partners.
