Lifestyle changes and brain health |
As June marks Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, researchers like Shannon Halloway, associate professor of nursing at UIC, are examining whether positive lifestyle changes slow brain aging and reduce the risk of cognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s disease. Halloway, who leads research on memory and thinking, pools data from more than 10,000 older adults across 13 earlier trials testing programs that promote physical activity, cognitive engagement, social interaction and healthy diet. She is available to discuss how lifestyle changes may improve cognitive outcomes over time, including what types and levels of change are most effective. Halloway can also address how delaying cognitive decline may help older adults maintain independence and reduce costs for families and caregivers.

Reddit study on sexuality dialogue |
A new study led by Ian Kennedy, assistant professor of sociology at UIC, highlights how the dynamics of social media platforms, such as moderation style, anonymity and group norms, shape whether conversations around sexuality become constructive or combative. The study’s analysis of Reddit conversations finds that users are more likely to speak openly about sexuality in supportive, community-driven spaces. At the same time, polarized or adversarial environments tend to produce more contentious, divided discussions. Kennedy is available to discuss how the findings offer insight into online discourse, digital culture and public conversations around LGBTQ+ identity and inclusion.
