Court ruling on AI-generated art |
A federal appeals court recently ruled that art created independently by artificial intelligence cannot be copyrighted, saying copyright protection requires a human being to author the work. UIC-based AI policy and law experts Michael Bennett, associate vice chancellor for data science and artificial intelligence strategy, and Yolanda King, associate professor of law and director of the Center for Intellectual Property, Information and Privacy Law, can discuss the significance of the ruling, the likelihood that it will be appealed, and what the ruling ultimately means for AI in the creative process.

Karen Lewis' life and legacy |
The personal and professional life of Karen Lewis, the late educator and Chicago Teachers Union leader, followed a similar path as Chicago’s education history. Elizabeth Todd-Breland, associate professor of history at UIC, worked on a memoir with Lewis until her death in 2021. Todd-Breland compiled vast interview notes, contextualized them and wrote them into a co-authored memoir, “I Didn’t Come Here to Lie.” Todd-Breland can provide perspective on Lewis’ legacy, its connection to current affairs and her unique approach to writing the memoir.
