If you have been teaching for a while, you know you should not assume your students know how to study. Maybe you have noticed that some students cram before an exam or don’t take enough time to review. It might be frustrating that your students can come from very different backgrounds with very different understanding of what it means to prepare for an exam. Something that can help all your students, but especially the ones that are underperforming is to teach them about Metacognition, or the knowledge and awareness of how to learn. 

Encouraging Metacognition in your classroom

Consider talking to your students about how to do homework and how to study for exams. Share with them specific strategies for learning concepts, processes, or skills in your discipline. Sometimes you need to tell students obvious things they need to do for planning or evaluating their own learning. For example, many students underestimate the time it takes to study and they end up cramming for an exam. This video from Saundra McGuire explains to students how to study.
