GOVO Venture Partners made its fourth portfolio company investment, leading a $2M seed round for the CMU spinout, VoxEQ. VoxEQ, a spinout through NREC/Carnegie Foundry, offers world class voice artificial intelligence to improve and protect human interactions.

Choolaah Opens New Location in Westlake on December 15
Founded by Carnegie Mellon University alumna and Co-CEO of Wholesome International Raji Sankar, Choolaah will now open its third location in Cleveland, Ohio in Westlake, located at Crocker Commons, a mixed-use plaza across the street from Crocker Park. This will be the seventh store for the
Cleveland-based company.

Carnegie Mellon University to Buy National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC)

After nearly 30 years, Carnegie Mellon University is poised to buy the real estate in which it has long operated the National Robotics Engineering Center, the linchpin of the city's Robotics Row that has grown up in the Strip District and Lawrenceville and a lodestar for the regional economy.

CMU's Deniz Birlikci Wins $50K SAFE Note At Berkeley's
 Demo Day

CMU student and Innovation Scholar Deniz Birlikci and Arda Akman, founders of ObviousAI, recently won the AI Entrepreneurs in Berkeley's Demo Day competition. ObviousAI received a 50K SAFE note through Unusual Ventures, marking the first investment into the company. 

ObviousAI is finetuning fashion product discovery on users' aesthetics. Their first product, ShopMyStyle, allows users to find products through searching with their natural language, or images.

Calling ALL Current CMU Student Entrepreneurs!

Registration is open for the 2024 McGinnis Venture Competition, a platform exclusively for Carnegie Mellon University's community of student entrepreneurs. This competition brings together Carnegie Mellon's best and brightest student entrepreneurs to compete for $60K in investments. All participants receive crucial interaction with alumni entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, an opportunity to raise capital and valuable feedback about ventures.

The Round one submission deadline is January 16, 2024 at 11:59 PM ET.

Matt Kirmayer of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, is currently offering office hours for newly established startup and emerging companies. Matt specializes in representing technology startups and emerging growth companies, assisting with entity formation, fundraising and overall growth needs. Startup companies with a founder who is a CMU graduate, undergraduate or alumni is eligible to register for
an appointment.
