New Tektites
In nature, a "tektite" is a meteorite made of glass that has formed as a result of high heat and high velocity while zinging through Earth's atmosphere. Here at the studio, "Tektite Glass" is material that Josh creates by mixing and melting together the components that make up tektite meteorites. The result is a coarse, black, molten goo that is barely workable. But Josh wrangles this uncooperative substance into sculptural forms that merge gnarly black exteriors with interiors made of elegant New Mexico, Corona, Iridescent, and Dichroic glass. The resulting vessels are evocative of otherworldly geodes that may have hurtled through space for millenia, only to burst open upon arrival here on Earth, revealing their marvelous, gleaming centers. After a long hiatus (which involved the "tektite furnace" being used for a different purpose), Josh has just finished this new collection.
