Myaamia Center Updates

Senior Night

We’re turning our attention toward spring and summer activities at the Myaamia Center! Our staff are preparing for summer community programs, and our Myaamia Heritage students are preparing for final exams and graduation.
Our nine graduating Heritage students recently presented their senior research projects to the Myaamia community. These projects challenge the students to combine what they have learned in the Myaamia Heritage Program with their area of study at Miami University. This year, project topics included genealogy research, ecological mapping, storytelling, filmmaking, and more. If you see any of our senior students, be sure to ask them about these projects!

In 2019, our community held the first game of peekitahaminki ‘lacrosse’ using all-wooden sticks in nearly 200 years. In a recent blog post, George Ironstrack discusses his experiences with the reclamation and revitalization of peekitahaminki through educational programs, playing with the Seneca-Cayuga, and wooden stick-making.

The Red Buds and other flowering trees are splashing color all over campus and reminding us that we’re well on our way towards summer (even though it has been chilly and rainy in Oxford recently). All this color tells us that it’s getting close to finals week and the end of the semester. It’s also time to play peekitahaminki and to get ready for a fun summer of educational programming and community gatherings!

Pakitahantaawi ‘Let’s play lacrosse!’ The Myaamia Heritage students recently had a chance to test out (or show off) their lacrosse skills during the Heritage class! Leading up to the game, the students have been learning about the history and revitalization of the game within the Myaamia community.

Smithsonian Folklife Festival: Youth and the Future of Culture
July 2-7, 2025
Washington, D.C
The Myaamia community, through the Myaamia Center, was invited to participate in this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival. This year, the festival will explore creativity, vitality, resilience, and intergenerational learning through the contributions and experiences of youth. It will feature youth-centered, and often youth-led, projects and organizations that generate new ideas, transform their communities, and confront contemporary challenges. Several of our Myaamia students from the Myaamia Heritage Program, along with Myaamia Center staff, will be at the festival to share Myaamia language, culture, and the program’s impact on our Tribal nation.
