How to Protect Your Home from Flooding
|
Take these simple actions before it rains:
|
-
Check downspouts and direct water away from your home and neighboring properties
- Clear drains and debris so water can flow properly
- Test sump pumps and backup generators or battery systems
-
Limit or delay unnecessary water usage during Overflow Action days
|
VILLAGE PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES
|
The Village offers programs to help reduce future flood risk:
|
-
Overhead Sewer Cost-Share Program. Overhead sewer systems help prevent basement flooding caused by sewer backups. The Village offers a 50/50 cost-share, up to $7,500, for eligible installations. Learn more on the Village’s Water, Sewer and Stormwater page.
- Yard drainage assistance. If your yard or block experiences flooding, the Village can work with you and your neighbors to design drainage solutions. Learn more about help with yard flooding. Note: Consultation is provided as staff resources permit.
|
GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE AND LANDSCAPING
|
Green infrastructure and native landscaping supports effective stormwater management.
|
-
Purchase a rain barrel. Rain barrels capture rainwater from your roof and save it for later use, helping prevent basement backups, street flooding and sewer overflows by keeping rainwater out of the sewer system. MWRD is offering discounted rain barrels while supplies last.
-
Install native landscaping. Native plants develop deep root systems that stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and absorb stormwater more effectively—helping slow water flow and reduce flooding.
