4th Annual First Lady's Wellness Walk & Amazing Race
| |
| | |
On Wednesday, October 16, Eagle Nation gathered to particapate in the 4th Annual First Lady's Wellness Walk & Amazing Race which equip students with tools to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. “To me, the walk is successful if even one person remembers to perform a monthly self-check, schedule a mammogram, or pursue a diagnostic mammogram, especially for communities like African American, Asian, and Latino populations, where awareness is critical,” said First Lady Jenkins.
Breast cancer touches every corner of our Coppin family: students, alumni, faculty, staff, and neighbors across Baltimore. As a university grounded in service and empowerment we are commited to using our voices to raise awareness.
I encourage you to learn the signs, schedule your screenings, and check on the people you love. Together, we can turn knowledge into action, and action into hope.

On Wednesday, October 16, students, alumni, neighbors, and partners gathered for three ceremonies across campus to celebrate legacies that will continue to guide Eagles for years to come. To honor legacy and inspire future generations, Coppin State University has dedicated three campus facilities that embody access, innovation, and community partnership: the Margaret Peters Tennis Complex, the Katherine Johnson Science & Technology Building, and the Henrietta Lacks Health & Human Services Building.
We also recognize Alfred Lacks Carter for his steadfast stewardship of the Lacks family legacy. In the spirit of advancing that legacy, we gratefully acknowledge civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump and his partners for their $10,000 donation in support of Coppin State students and community-centered initiatives.
From courtside discipline and teamwork, to hands-on STEM research and collaborative problem-solving, to ethically grounded, community-centered health education, these spaces create clear pipelines from classroom to career. President Anthony L. Jenkins noted that honoring Peters (a Coppin alumna), Johnson, and Lacks calls students to turn knowledge into service and advance equity.

Hope Mims ’03 always dreamed of running a business. Today, she’s the Broker/Owner of NextHome Mims Realty Group, where she transformed a thriving independent firm into a franchise to give her agents more technology, support, and leverage. The result: a 64% performance increase in the first year. Training and development are her favorite parts of the job—she learns relentlessly and pours that knowledge back into her team.
Mims credits Coppin with keeping her focused on finishing her degree and applauds the inspiring teaching of Dr. Ron Williams, whose approach made business feel attainable. She carries that mindset into the community. A committed Baltimore leader, Mims chaired Coppin’s Center for Strategic Entrepreneurship Alumni Advisory Board, helped establish the Real Estate Acquisition Program for Students (REAPS), and sponsored students to complete real estate classes and earn their licenses.
In December 2024, Governor Wes Moore appointed Mims a Commissioner for the Maryland Real Estate Commission, where she advances training, consumer protections, and professional standards. She’s also the author of Your Key to Homeownership: A Step-by-Step Guide to Financial Readiness, a practical roadmap to stronger credit, smart saving, and confident buying.
