Dear colleagues,
Before beginning this week’s update, I want to pause to acknowledge the heartbreaking loss of one of our own last week. My deepest sympathies go out to all who knew Rose Way. For anyone in need of support, please do not hesitate to use or direct others to the resources Senior Vice President Ginger Ambler shared in her message to the campus community. We must continue to care for one another, in times of celebration and in times of grief.
I really enjoyed the opportunity to connect with many of you throughout last week’s Homecoming & Reunion events. A special thank you to the countless individuals whose dedication and hard work made the weekend such a resounding success. From the meticulous planning to the seamless execution, your efforts created an extraordinary experience for all who attended. Thursday’s celebration of William & Mary’s Batten School of Coastal & Marine Sciences at VIMS was a particularly memorable occasion. Beyond the “wow” factor of this immersive event, it was a testament to the outstanding academic foundation W&M has built that continues to generate innovative scholarship and attract transformative support. As Jane Batten noted during her remarks, the Batten School is already well-positioned to play a key role in advancing W&M’s Vision 2026 and shaping the university’s future trajectory. Last week’s dedication represented a culmination of significant work across multiple departments and teams. Thank you to everyone involved, especially Dean Derek Aday for his ongoing leadership.

This week’s shoutout goes to the volunteer team for &Hacks, W&M’s annual hackathon. This year saw record-breaking attendance, with over 250 hackers, the highest turnout since pre-COVID, and 29 project submissions, which you can view online. &Hacks featured 20 workshops led by students, alumni, and campus organizations, as well as an industry panel, career fair, and research poster session.
