Dear colleagues,
As we welcome students back to campus for the start of the spring semester, we are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of freshman Leah B. Yoseph. This tragedy comes during an already difficult time for our W&M community, which has faced several heartbreaking events in recent months. I encourage you to care for yourselves and support one another, and to make use of the resources available to help during this difficult time. Counselors may be reached by phone at 757-221-3620 at any time, and you may access a variety of services through TimelyCare as well.

Here are the top “5 Things to Know” this week:
|
-
Governor Youngkin approved the Faculty Early Retirement Incentive plan for William & Mary last week. This Plan provides eligible tenured instructional and research faculty members an incentive to voluntarily retire from the university. The first application cycle opened today, January 21st, and will close at 5 pm EST on March 7th. Faculty applying in this application period must retire in 2025. A second application cycle will open later this year, with the expectations of a summer 2026 retirement date. More information on the plan details can be found on the Faculty Affairs website.
-
On January 8th, the 2025 Virginia General Assembly convened for a short session to update the state’s biennial budget and consider legislative proposals. Our Government Affairs team continues to monitor and advocate on behalf of W&M legislative and budget priorities. As a reminder, if you receive an invitation to testify or provide feedback on legislation in your professional capacity, including invitations coordinated through professional associations or other organizations, please coordinate with the Office of Government and External Affairs. Please contact governmentaffairs@wm.edu with any specific questions and review the published guidance on how to engage with government officials and policymakers.
-
William & Mary will honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a number of events, including Forward to Justice: March to The Hearth, on January 28th, and the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Speaker and Fellowship Dinner on January 30th. The Martin Luther King Jr. events will culminate on February 1st when Civic & Community Engagement and the Center for Student Diversity host a special, collaborative Service Saturday.

William & Mary Athletics continues to rank among the best academically in the country. For the 19th time in the last 20 years, W&M produced the highest Federal Graduation Rate among all Division I public institutions. Congratulations to our incredible student-athletes and the fantastic Athletics Department, faculty, and staff who empower their success.
- I am thrilled to officially welcome Doug Schmidt as our inaugural dean of the School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics. I'm also pleased to announce the following additions to the CDSP dean's office:
- Christopher D. Carone, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies
- Christopher A. Del Negro, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs
- Hayley Janak, Associate Dean for Finance & Administration
- Jessica L. Walton, Executive Assistant & Advisor
This core team will play a vital role in the successful launch of the School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics later this year, and I look forward to continuing our collaboration as we bring this vision to life.
