Dear Health Sciences faculty and staff:
Since January, Health Sciences leadership — with guidance from University of California and UC San Diego leaders — has strategized about our future in response to recent and proposed changes to federal agencies and policies.
The complex issues we are navigating have the potential to significantly impact our finances as well as our research, clinical, teaching and working environments, as summarized in yesterday’s Campus Notice. In his message, Chancellor Khosla shared that although we cannot accurately quantify total financial losses at this time, our early models indicate possible reductions ranging from $75 million to more than $500 million annually, with every school and unit being impacted.
Many people within our university community are experiencing concern and anxiety amid the difficult decisions and uncertainty surrounding these challenges, including those who have recently been impacted directly by grant terminations and other federal actions. For example, as of this message, Health Sciences has received more than 25 Stop Work Orders and terminations for research contracts and grants.
Proactive planning for short- and long-term impacts are critical for our ability to continue fulfilling our missions and protecting our people and operations. As we progress with our planning, we remain guided by our Principles of Community.
Health Sciences is taking the following measures to avoid potential deficits and support our community through this change:
