Dear Eagle Nation:
Black History Month is a time where we reflect upon and celebrate the accomplishments of Black Americans and honor the impact they have made on life in the United States. Cater G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Month sought the inclusion of Black Americans in the narrative of American History, so our contributions not to be forgotten, or erased.
Black History includes people who, as a group, have a range of cultural experiences that do not fit a singular mold. This is a time to celebrate the diversity within the Black community itself, and also reflect upon what inclusion means in sharing our traditions, culture, and gifts with the world.
Inclusion is not solely a call for accepting minorities in predominately white spaces. Inclusion is a concept for us all to embrace, as we seek to foster peace, understanding, and create opportunities for everyone.
Recently, our 91st Miss Coppin State University, Keylin Perez (‘23), has been subjected to online bullying and harassment because she is a Latina representing a Historically Black Institution. Keylin represents our great university with grace and works tirelessly to serve the Coppin Campus Community.
| |
Keylin was voted Miss Coppin by members of the student body in 2022 and has earned the respect and admiration of of her peers, the Coppin faculty, staff, and other members of Eagle Nation because of her character, her love of our university, and her love of people.

As I have said many times before, Coppin is a Historically Black Institution, but not exclusively Black. I want to reiterate Coppin’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. They are important for everyone to practice, including here at our HBCU, where roughly 20 percent of our student population does not identify as Black or African American.
Here at Coppin State, we enroll students who come from 35 states, including the District of Columbia, and 30 international countries. We are a proud HBCU that educates a multi-cultural, and muti-generational student population. We will remain committed to nurturing potential and transforming lives through education.
