Coppin State University Publishes Groundbreaking Discovery of New Lipid Structures in Mammalian Cells

Dr. Hany Sobhi
Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Hany Sobhi, Coppin State University’s Center for Organic Synthesis has spearheaded a groundbreaking discovery in lipid research. Collaborating with teams from the University of California Davis School of Medicine, USDA-ARS Microbiome & Metabolism Research Unit, and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, the research has revealed two unique odd-chain fatty acids. These cyclopropane fatty acids are linked to “non-self” biochemistry, originating from microbial metabolism through food intake or gut microbiota.

"We have uncovered two cyclopropane fatty acids that enter the body through food or gut microbiota, marking a significant step in understanding microbial metabolic pathways. This discovery lays the foundation for continued research in lipid metabolism, and I’m proud of our innovation and the recognition we have ve received from the microbiome lipids community and the Journal of Lipid Research," said Dr. Sobhi.

This discovery not only deepens the scientific understanding of lipid structures but also opens new pathways for research in biochemistry and health sciences.
