Welcome back to the Nest! As we kick off the Spring semester, I am delighted to officially welcome each and every one of you back to campus.
This year, we have the incredible honor of celebrating 125 Years of Excellence at Coppin State University. It fills me with immense pride to share this milestone with our amazing students, phenomenal faculty, and dedicated staff. This will be a year long celebration with events kicking off during Homecoming Week.
Together, we will build upon our legacy to posistion our beloved Coppin to uplifting generation to come. Your unwavering dedication to excellence and our mission of growth and innovation is truly inspiring.
Let us remember that our unity and commitment to making a difference are our greatest strengths. Together, we will continue to excel and contribute to Coppin State University's rich legacy.

This year's theme, "African Americans and Labor," is presented in collaboration with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. I encourage everyone to participate in events and activities designed to educate, inspire, and engage.

Black Farmers, Black Labor: Cultivating Economic Empowerment
February 4 | 12 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. | Virtual
Black farmers will share their experiences and challenges in the United States, with a focus on the DMV area. The panel will explore key topics, including land access, capital acquisition, market opportunities, climate change adaptation, sustainable farming practices, food sovereignty, and policy advocacy. Featuring special guest, Dr. Releford of Blooms Ranch.

Beyond the Workplace: Labor and Dementia in Black Communities
February 13 | 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Tawes Ballroom
The award-winning documentary, written and directed by C. Nathaniel Brown sheds light on the impact that dementia has on the African American Community and provides vital information that stimulates conversations. CEU’s are available for Social Workers for 1.5 hours in Category 1. (Registeration required by Feb. 7)

Imhotep Simba Pickering ('15)

Congratulations to Imhotep Simba Pickering (’15) for being awarded the 2024 Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Graduate Fellowship. This prestigious fellowship, funded by the U.S. Department of State and collaboratively administered by the Bureau of Global Talent Management and Howard University, is a merit- and need-based program. It supports exceptional individuals who aspire to pursue careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State.
"Coppin has shaped my career and personal journey through service, resiliency, and community," said Imhotep Simba Pickering. "Since graduating in the spring of 2015, my entire career has been rooted in community and public service. Whether domestically or abroad, every career opportunity I’ve engaged in has centered on uplifting individuals from underrepresented backgrounds who reflect my journey to Coppin State."

Coppin State University has been spotlighted in Diverse: Issues In Higher Education for its impressive transformation under President Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins. Since 2020, the university has seen a significant boost in student success and institutional effectiveness, with retention rates climbing from 52% to 74%. Key initiatives like the Eagle Achievement Center and the Fannie Jackson Coppin Scholars program have played a crucial role in this progress.

Join us for Coppin Chopped - Soul of Labor: A Culinary Tribute to African American Workers hosted by the African American History Committee, Thompson Hospitality, and Business Services.
This year's Coppin Chopped competition will challenge six teams to cook, create, and curate dishes inspired by the rich history of Black labor and its impact on American society.
