Mary Cushman, M.D.’89, M.Sc., Elected President of International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis

Praising her “distinguished record of research, mentorship, and service,” the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) has announced the election of Mary Cushman, M.D.’89, M.Sc., University Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Larner, as ISTH president for the 2028–2030 term. She will be installed following two years as ISTH president-elect.

Investiture of Anthony Charles, M.D.

Anthony Charles, M.D., M.P.H., vice chair for faculty development in the Department of Surgery at the Larner College of Medicine (pictured at left), was invested as the inaugural holder of the Green and Gold Professorship of Faculty Development in Surgery on April 2. Larner Dean Richard. L. Page, M.D., and Department of Surgery Chair Mitchell Norotsky, M.D., presented a medallion commemorating the event.

PitchFest 2026

Four Larner researchers—Maria-Cristina Bravo, Ph.D.’12, Mansour Gergi, M.D., Debora Kamin Mukaz, Ph.D. (pictured at left), and Saeedeh Mirbagheri, M.D.—participated in a PitchFest hosted by the Vermont Center for Cardiovascular and Brain Health on March 13. The event challenged scientists to present their research concisely in simple, engaging language, with Dr. Gergi’s winning pitch awarded $1,000.

Groundbreaking MS Research

Research led by Larner Professor and Chair of Neurological Sciences Peter Calabresi, M.D., has found that a biological mechanism that leads to neuron cell death in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) can be blocked with gene therapy and new drugs currently under development in the laboratory. This finding points to potential treatments for progressive MS, which is currently untreatable.

ACCOLADES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Two medical students from the Larner College of Medicine’s Class of 2028 were elected to regional leadership roles within the Latino Medical Student Association following the Northeast Regional Conference this March. Past Larner Chapter Co-Presidents Mirella Fernandez and Jesus Mendoza were named regional director-elects and Jesus Mendoza were named regional director-elects and will assume full regional director roles in 2027.

Larner Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine Sarah Schlein, M.D.’10, has been named inaugural program director of rural medicine education in the Office of Medical Education. In this role, she will manage the rural medicine pathway program and ensure that Larner’s rural education experiences meet the rigorous standards set by accrediting bodies while promoting comparability across all sites.

Breast oncologist Peter Kaufman, M.D., professor of medicine at the Larner College of Medicine, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, a national leader in advancing cancer research. His leadership and expertise in clinical research will support the organization’s mission to advance cancer care and discovery.

On April 8—during National Public Health Awareness Week—Jan K. Carney, M.D., M.P.H., associate dean for public health and health policy, presented a lecture at the Larner College of Medicine titled “From Past to Present to Future: Transformative Lessons from Public Health History.” Dr. Carney explored topics ranging from environmental health to policy and how lessons from the past often shape the future.

Panelists discuss “How the New NIH Scoring System Impacts Our Grant Writing,” changes in the way NIH grants are scored, and strategies for writing grants to have more impact under the new scoring system.
