A Legacy of Innovation and Impact |
After nearly 40 years of service to the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, Distinguished Educator Cate Nicholas, Ed.D., M.S., PA, associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences and founder and director of UVM’s Clinical Simulation Laboratory, retired as of July 1, 2024. She leaves a legacy of profound student and patient impact.

| 2024–25 Schweitzer Fellows |
Five teams of Larner Class of 2027 medical students, along with teams from Dartmouth College and Vermont Law and Graduate School, were selected as 2024–25 Schweitzer Fellows through the Schweitzer Fellows Program. This year, students will spend hundreds of hours on projects with community partners that address existing health disparities throughout the region.

This spring, thanks to a collaboration between the UVM Larner College of Medicine and UVM Extension 4-H, Health Heroes Community Workshops for Youth offered three hands-on learning sessions to more than 25 local eighth- to 12th-graders interested in health and health care. The partnership extends the reach of Larner to five local counties, advancing steps toward a healthier Vermont.

ACCOLADES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Larner’s Student National Medical Association partnered with the Richard Kemp Center in Burlington recently to host “Ubuntu: Nurturing Community Wellness.” The evening of health-focused activities and celebration, including workshops on mental health, personal development, and more, truly exemplified Ubuntu—an ancient African word expressing the interconnectedness between people.

Faculty in the Department of Medicine at the University of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine were honored with awards on June 14 during the weekly grand rounds meeting. Among the honors presented at the event were the Distinguished Clinician Award, the Distinguished Mentor Award, the Quality Scholarship Award, the Meritorious Service Award, and the Distinguished Educator Award.

Two Larner-affiliated researchers won their respective poster competitions at the Vermont Center for Cardiovascular and Brain Health symposium held in June at UVM: Class of 2026 medical student Sarah Krumholz, M.S., RD, LDN, for her population science poster; and UVM senior Gabe Speidel, who works in the Cipolla Lab, for his basic science poster.

UVM Cancer Center members Frances Carr, Ph.D., professor of pharmacology, and Seth Frietze, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry, have received an Impact Award from the Department of Defense that will allow them to continue their foundational and translational research investigating novel therapeutic strategies for thyroid cancer, the most common endocrine cancer worldwide.

May 12 brought springtime footy action at Dartmouth as soccer players from UVM’s Larner College of Medicine battled their counterparts from Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine in a nail-biter of a game that went into overtime. Larner brought home the win with a final score of 5-4.

The Investiture of Gary An, M.D., as the inaugural holder of the Green and Gold Professorship of Trauma and Critical Care will be held on Monday, July 29, at 4:00 p.m. in the Hoehl Gallery. Among the highest academic honors that UVM can bestow on a faculty member, an endowed position recognizes and celebrates academic achievement and encourages scholarly and service excellence.
