Celebrating Miami: Tribe and University Week 2026

October 30- November 4

Each fall, the Myaamia Center, in partnership with the Miami University athletics department, celebrates the relationship between the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and Miami University.

Tribal leadership will travel to Oxford, and we will honor both the overall relationship and the Myaamia Center's 25th anniversary with in-game events, special shout-outs, and festivities throughout the week.

Additional details and the full schedule of events will be available on our website soon.

Daryl Baldwin recently penned a reflection on his family’s journey to reclaim Myaamiaataweenki ‘the Miami language’. It is personal, informative, and compelling. As Daryl begins his transition toward retirement, it is useful and good to have these kinds of conversations about where we are and how far we have come on the path toward the revitalization of Miami culture.

On September 10, the Aatotantaawi group met to have a discussion about all of the events that happened during this summer’s National Gathering week.
Tribal members and their families are invited to join us for “Aatotantaawi: Myaamia Culture Hour,” a gathering once a month to learn and connect with the community. The best way to access the group and get reminders about topics and times is through the Aatotantaawi: Myaamia Culture Hour collection on Šaapohkaayoni. Our next get-together is October 8, when we will learn from Cam Shriver about a Myaamia boomtown called Pickawillany, which existed in the middle of the 1700s. Plan to join us!

Working with the Office of Human Resource Management (OHRM), the Myaamia Center has scheduled six learning opportunities for Miami University employees this fall!

In early August, the Outreach office hosted a learning session for OHRM staff, during which Education Outreach Specialist Andrew Sawyer introduced the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and their relationship with Miami University. Following up on that, he worked with OHRM to add additional information about the Miami Tribe and the Myaamia Center to the orientation material shared with new university employees and also discussed the possibility of offering this learning opportunity to employees across the university. The original sessions set for September and October filled so quickly that three additional dates were added.

Available sessions:
Friday, November 6: 1:30-3 pm
Friday, November 13: 9:30-11 am
Friday, November 20: 9:30- 11 am

With the start of the semester behind us, the first-year students are settling into life on campus, and the upperclassmen are settling back into their routines. Myaamia seniors are starting to think about their capstone projects and prepare for life after college.
This year, the Myaamia students are learning about concepts of tribal sovereignty, how Myaamiaki 'Myaamia people' are living today, and what it means to have an active tribal government.
As the weather finally starts to cool off, pawpaws are falling by the dozens, and many of our students get together to play lacrosse on Central Quad.
